Fishing the inshore waters of North Topsail Beach is all about technique and timing. We'll be using light tackle and live bait to target the sweet spots where our target species hang out. Depending on the tide and conditions, we might be sight-casting to tailing Redfish in the shallows, working soft plastics along grass lines for Speckled Trout, or drifting live baits near structure for big Flounder. Captain Keith's years of experience mean he knows just how to adjust tactics to put you on the fish, even when conditions get tough. He'll show you the ropes if you're new to inshore fishing, or swap stories and techniques if you're an old salt.

Black Drum are the powerhouses of the inshore waters. These bruisers can grow to over 50 pounds, but we usually target the "puppy drum" in the 5-20 pound range. They're known for their distinctive chin barbels and powerful runs. Black Drum love to hang around structure and oyster beds, so we'll be targeting them with fresh cut bait or live shrimp. The fight of a Black Drum is something every angler should experience - they pull like a freight train and don't give up easily.
Summer Flounder, also known as Fluke, are the masters of camouflage in these waters. These flat fish can change their color to match the bottom, making them nearly invisible until they strike. We target Flounder using a technique called bounce-bottom fishing, where we'll slowly drag baits along the bottom to entice a bite. The challenge with Flounder is in the hookset - you've got to give them a moment to take the bait before setting the hook. When you do connect, be ready for some acrobatic jumps and strong runs.
Redfish, or Red Drum, are probably the most sought-after inshore species in North Carolina. These copper-colored beauties are known for their distinctive spot near the tail and their hard-fighting nature. We'll be targeting Redfish in the "slot" size, typically between 18-27 inches, which makes for great eating if you choose to keep a few. Sight-fishing for tailing Reds in shallow water is one of the most exciting experiences in inshore fishing. When hooked, Redfish make powerful runs and can really test your drag system.

Black Drum are the heavyweights of the drum family, often tipping the scales at 30-90 pounds. You'll find these bruisers hanging around oyster beds and mudflats in our local estuaries. They're not picky eaters, crushing shellfish with powerful teeth. Spring's your best bet for hooking into a school of these prehistoric-looking fish. Anglers love 'em for the fight - when a big one takes your bait, hold on tight! Just remember, the smaller ones (under 15 pounds) taste way better. For bait, nothing beats a fresh crab or clam. Here's a local trick: use a heavy leader and let your bait sit on the bottom. When you feel that telltale thump, give 'em a second before setting the hook. These drum make a distinctive croaking sound, so keep your ears open too. It's like nature's own fish finder!
Redfish, or red drum, are the rockstars of our shallow waters. Look for that telltale spot near the tail - it's nature's own bullseye. These copper-colored beauties typically run 28-33 inches, but the big bulls can push 50 pounds. You'll find 'em in super skinny water, sometimes with their backs out of the water! They love hanging around oyster bars, grass flats, and old pier pilings. Spring and fall are prime time, but you can catch 'em year-round. Reds put up a heck of a fight and taste great on the plate. They'll hit just about anything when they're feeding - topwater lures, jigs, or live bait all work well. Here's a local secret: on calm days, look for their tails sticking up as they root around for crabs. Sight-casting to tailing reds is about as fun as fishing gets. Just remember to approach quietly - these fish spook easy in shallow water.
Summer Flounder, or "fluke" as we call 'em, are masters of camouflage. These flatfish blend right into the sandy bottom, with both eyes on their left side. Most run 15-20 inches, but the big girls can hit 26 pounds. You'll find them in our inshore waters and estuaries, especially from September to November. Flounder fishing's all about patience and technique. Use live bait like minnows or mullet, hooked through the eye or lips. A 7-foot rod with a sturdy line is your best bet. These fish are ambush predators, so work your bait slowly along the bottom. When you feel that distinctive thump, give it a second before setting the hook. Flounder put up a good fight and make for some fantastic eating. Here's a local tip: try drifting with the current, dragging your bait along promising structure. It's a great way to cover ground and find where they're hiding.
